The next topic in our series this month as we continue to celebrate “Get Organized (GO) Month” (For more information on “GO Month” activities, visit www.napo.net) is a focus on the office space in your home.

The home office space has become more and more important as the current job climate has forced many of us to work out of our homes on a part-time to a full-time basis. This space may be a room unto itself or simply a sectioned off area of your home; both concepts benefit greatly when designed to maximize efficiency which will reap rewards like increased productivity; reduced stress levels and organized time-management.

The following guidelines will help you in the process of organizing, designing storage solutions and creating efficient work areas in your home office space.

Separate Personal and Work Items: You need to establish a clear separation of your work items and your personal and family items. This step will help you by removing distractions while increasing your ability to focus and stay organized in both areas of your life as well as reduce your frustration when researching files. Invest in streamlined and accessible storage solutions that allow you to file in two distinct areas; always be sure all files and folders are clearly identified for future reference.

Design to Fit Your Business: Take a moment to really think about the space and the needs of your business as you start designing organizational solutions. Are you in a financial or medical industry or are you a creative designer or photographer? Each of these businesses requires unique work areas and storage solutions that work best for them.

Expert Tip: When designing the space, be sure to add your own personal touches and include things you love. This will make going to “work” at home more enticing and effective for you in the long run. Invest in comfortable seating and lighting and don’t forget to choose a wall color to adding balance and calm creating the most efficient and productive environment possible each and every day.

Clean Desk, Clean Computer: The concept here is to unclutter in both places; there is nothing more stressful than a desk filled with piles of paper, sticky notes, old files, etc. as well as an email inbox with hundreds of emails and old files floating around. Make time to file client papers and projects away daily and archive folders from 2011, making ample space for 2012 projects to come. Clean up your email folders in the same fashion; file client emails, delete emails and clean out your sent and old file folders while creating new folders for 2012 projects.

Expert Tip: To ensure these areas do not get overly cluttered and disorganized in the future, make a task for yourself at month’s end, for example, to review files and folders and put everything in it’s rightful place. This time-saving tip increases your productivity levels, as you will find yourself spending only 5-10 minutes cleaning up vs. an entire day lost.

January 2012 marks the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO)’s 8th Annual Get Organized (GO) Month! This month-long initiative is dedicated to empowering all individuals and businesses to take control of the chaos by providing the resources, tools and educational programming to get started. For more information on “GO Month” activities, visit www.napo.net.

After the holidays, our home is often in disarray due to holiday decorations toys, gifts received, hosting parties and out-of town guests, etc. The idea here is to create a plan to become more organized which results in reducing stress, saving time and money, increasing productivity and even enhancing your quality of life.

Let’s focus on one space in your home that tops the list for most if us; this space can quickly get out-of-hand in the organizational department making daily routines tiresome and stressful… the woman’s closet.

The following steps will help you create your own creative organization plan for your closet and help you keep it organized, efficient and beautiful every day.

Take Inventory: This requires you to really step back and look at all the items in your closet from clothing to shoes to accessories. Remove all the items and sort them into categories like daywear, formal wear, sportswear as well as seasonal groupings for winter, fall, spring and summer. Expert TIP: Discard items you no longer like, wear or need and decide if they can be donated or simply trashed. This crucial part will save you time and be more effective in the long run as you go through your daily routine.

Redesign the Space: Once the space is emptied, now is the time to redesign the layout so that it works for your personal daily needs. Talk with your design consultant and see what type of storage and organizational tools are available for your needs. Shelving and hanging rods place at the correct height can add space and increase efficiency. Formal wear may require special treatment as well as designing storage for shoes, boots and accessories like belts and handbags with increased visual appeal and ease of access. Expert TIP: Shoes and boots can be a challenge to store; remember to sort them by color and season so you can find what you need quickly. Shoe racks and clear shoeboxes work well in smaller areas, as they can be stacked at full height of the closet taking advantage of any unused space. Remember to securely buckle and zip shoes and boots closed as this deceases any possible damage over time.

Personal Touch: A great tip from expert designers is to add a personal touch to your closet. Scented candles (never lit!!) and fragrance sachets add a fresh appeal each time you enter (lavender and citrus scents like lemon, grapefruit, orange work well here). If space allows, try adding a full length framed mirror and a small fabric-covered chair for visual appeal and functionality or even a small vintage chandelier for that luxurious touch.

Did you know that one of the top five New Years’ resolutions on everyone’s list is getting organized? With this being such a high priority for all of us in a wide variety of ways, we want to welcome this New Year 2012 with a sneak peek at what we find important about having an organized lifestyle for both work and home.

January is a celebration of just that; it is officially the 8th annual National “Get Organized” (GO) Month put on by the The National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) and we will be focusing on some solutions and upcoming trends to start you on the right path to a peaceful and organized year for you and your family. Here are some interesting stats on this topic:

A NAPO survey showed that 65% of respondents consider their homes to be at least moderately disorganized

96% of those respondents felt they would save time by being more organized

Price Waterhouse Cooper estimates that workers spend nearly 50% of their time looking for information because it is not organized properly

With all this disorganization and things running a muck, we find that this contributes greatly to our emotional and physical well-being affecting our energy levels and overall health over time. Follow these first steps in your plan to get organized:

The List: Set aside some time in your busy holiday schedule to sit down and make a list of why you thing you need to get organized and what you are looking to achieve. The idea here us that each of us have unique lifestyles and what works for me will not necessarily work for you. Start with simple ideas and then expand on them to determine the best solutions that you and your family can put into action both at work, school and in the home.

Expert TIP: Did you find yourself constantly overwhelmed with activities and appointments every week? A great solution here is to design a household calendar that allows each family member to note important events, holidays, school sports, etc. Each individual is responsible for their own items and the combined calendar makes it easier to get a good overall look at the day, week and month ahead.

Clean & Archive: We all have work and home computers, iPhones, etc. where we receive data, photos, emails, etc. all year long. Now is the time to clean out all your technical devices and back-up emails and files by archiving them elsewhere giving you a completely new and clean slate for 2012. Once old emails and files are archived to CD or on your computer, remember to carefully label each item or folder for your future reference.

Check out our last guest post this year from expert and special guest contributor, Roxy Hambleton, Nationally Certified Professional Organizer. Look for new updates and topics to come as we get ready for the 2012 New Year!

By: Roxy Hambleton, CPO
Nationally Certified Professional Organizer

I am often asked when the best time to your organize holiday decorations would be. Well, right now is the “perfect” time to evaluate what you have and organize what you are keeping and what needs to get trashed this season. When I was growing up, I remember my mom had one small box of ornaments that went up every year. My dad would go to the attic and bring it down and we’d decorate the tree with tinsel and garland, big bright lights and red balls, and a sprinkling of individual ornaments.

Well, to quote BD (Bob Dylan for all you young’uns), “The times, they are a’changing” and they’ve been changing for quite a few decades. Holiday decorating is an all-out event for some and a nightmare to deal with for others. It does not have to be like that. Let’s look at HOW to put everything back and you’ll be in awe of how easy it will be to put everything together in December of 2012.

First of all, ask yourself, “Are all my holiday decorations in a centralized location?” And I do mean ALL… We need to keep our Christmas linens or Hanukkah platters or Kwanzaa flag all together. Go through the house and round up all the holiday decor and bring to a centralized location (a large room, or garage with no cars best). I know everyone is enamored of green and red bins we see in stores to keep holiday decor, those are great, but ANY container will do, even the boxes of some of the larger gifts from this year will do. Now, you must determine where these boxes or bins will be stored. Plastic bins kept one on top of another for 11 months will severely damage the bottom load-bearing bins. It is very important to store your holiday bins/boxes on shelving of some sort in your garage, under-stair storage area, or wherever your home best allows for the number of boxes you have in total.

What you need to do next is separate your holiday decorations into categories: plushes, ornaments, lights, tabletop (anything that must “sit” on a table top), et cetera. Go from group to group and look at the items carefully and ask yourself the following:

Did I use display this decoration this year?

Does it have sentimental value?

Is it in good condition (not broken)?

Is my home large enough to put this item out without the home looking cluttered?

Is it aesthetically pleasing?

WILL I USE IT AGAIN NEXT YEAR?

If you answered yes to all of these questions, the item is definitely worthy of the space it will take up for the next 11 months. Put it, with all its “like items,” together in a box and label the top and two sides so you will know what is in there for next year’s all-day decorating adventure.

If you did not use a certain decoration this year and will not use it next year, donate it right there and then. Did you know that there is a section in the Goodwill receiving back room (shelves and shelves) dedicated to holiday donations given all year long? When November comes, they are set thanks to individuals who had the foresight to realize they need to let someone else enjoy that giant, outdoor lighted candy cane that just does not look right in the new house they moved into last month.

The holidays are all about traditions and memories. If an item has strong sentimental value, that is the best item you can have. The traced hand prints from my daughter in 1st grade (she’s now 18) or my son’s clothespin wreath from Kindergarten (he’s now 17) are my absolute favorites. Other items can be replaced, those items from Christmases past are priceless.

Bring ALL your holiday decor to a centralized location and look at each item through sentimental eyes. Keep only what you will use next year to make your home seem festive, not cluttered, and you will be feeling the holiday spirit next November into December in a much more organized manner!

December is coming to an end and we want to close out the 2011 year by showcasing some of our favorite celebrity spaces that we found creative, inspiring and simply beautiful. We hope this preview will give your mind the fodder it needs to begin brainstorming and creating a plan for a beautiful design space of your own! Let your mind focus on these unique spaces and the use of colors, layout and how the space ultimately feels as you enter the room.

Academy Award winning actress, Hillary Swank, shared the study in her Manhattan apartment as a perfect example of how to utilize built-ins creating great design, organization and maximizing space efficiency. The use of the olive green color on the walls is in balance with the neutral toned sofa while the pillows add an eye-catching pop of color as you enter the space. Hillary is an avid reader and this space reflects this love of the written word as it offers you a place to relax and unwind with your favorite literary piece.

Molly Sim's Bedroom

We love the style and design of famous Covergirl model, Molly Sims’ bedroom with the use of dark, contrasting colors on the floor tile and furniture mixed with the sharp bold colors in the fabric and window treatments. The high beamed ceilings add graphic and architectural appeal.

Design TIP: Texture in flooring, walls and fabrics is key this upcoming 2012 design year. Look for natural fibers and fabrics that provide soft tones and interesting textural appeal to your spaces. To keep your master bedroom structured and organized, look into redesigning all the storage spaces in the bedroom and closets to maximize use and create a clean modern feel.

Jerry Seinfeld's Kitchen

The kitchen has always been a favorite space of ours and Jerry Seinfeld’s kitchen does not let us down in the least. The warm wood color and rustic beams add style and character to the space and the light color cabinets blend beautifully with design focus. The center island adds design interest and offers Mr. Seinfeld tons of storage space to hide all those much needed kitchen items and accessories, great for a small family gathering or lat evening cocktail party with friends.

Design TIP: When looking at your kitchen space, don’t forget about the pantry. This is a great place to start your redesign by designing storage and organizational solutions for all your food items and kitchen accessories.

As you’re in the midst of ushering out this 2011 year and looking at your list of 2012 New Year’s resolutions, have you thought about adding a different one this year? The eco-friendly and green design trend has become more and more popular each year and we think this 2012 year is the perfect time to make some changes that will make your home space not only safe for the environment and your family, but a showcase of beautiful design and efficiency.

There are a wide variety of concepts and products that are available that fit the green and eco-friendly guidelines for home design, both interior and exterior. One of the first places to think about in your home is the flooring. Today, there are many eco-friendly options available to you that will fit your design needs and compliment your space. Check out bamboo floors, reclaimed wood floors and recycled glass, ceramic and aluminum tiles.

Find an expert vendor/installer in your area and learn all you can about the materials themselves, the installation requirements and how to maintain the finished floors. Ask your design expert what type of floor would work for your home spaces based on your design style, family needs, etc.

Opt for organizational and storage products that are eco-friendly and low VOC. Many products today are labeled accordingly so you can choose wisely when designing your spaces. Many of these products are also contemporary in design making the final look streamlined and efficient for you and your family. Think about spaces like your kitchen and bedrooms where an updated storage system can make life easier and more organized! Don’t forget your garage space in this design update; remove old chemicals that are hazardous and replace them with environmentally friendly options for cleaners and lawn fertilizers. Eco-friendly options can be used here as well when designing storage shelves and work areas for this space.

Your walls and fabric items are also a great place to add some green elements. If your family members suffer from allergies, etc., look into environmentally friendly paints with low VOCs. There are a variety of brands and design colors available that will make your walls stand out as the add the benefit of increasing the health of your home space and your family ten-fold. Remember to look into eco-friendly fabrics and pillows both for the bedroom and other living spaces to eliminate unwanted harmful chemicals that you’re breathing in when you are relaxing or especially at bedtime.

Set up a meeting and consult with your personal design expert to come up with options for each of your home spaces and then develop a plan to make changes on a room-to-room basis. Once you begin this process, you will learn and find many creative and smart solutions that you can incorporate into your own home easily. So start your new year right by following these simple steps and you will be on your way to a fresher, healthier home space for you, your family and the environment in 2012!

Follow the tips of experts and write down your ideas, goals and objectives relating to organization, time management and just simplifying everyone’s daily routines.

The upcoming 2012 year is the perfect time to review all the past year’s achievements as well as the items that have been forgotten or put on the back burner. Make a new checklist and prioritize it based on your wants and needs for the new year and start planning how to get them done once the holidays are over.

To get you and your family started, take a peek at the things we think are important in this initial process. This information will give you the jump start you need to get everyone organized and ready to take on the 2012 New Year!

1. Take it Room-by-Room: To organize your entire home space can be overwhelming indeed, so we suggest breaking it down room-by-room. Make notes about what you want to remove/change for each space and talk to your family about tackling them one at a time as a team. Working on one space at a time allows for you to research and invest in storage and organizational items slowly, without breaking the bank. It also makes it a bit easier to work with each family member when it comes to donating or trashing unnecessary items that they are having a hard time parting with!

NOTE: Contact your local Goodwill and drop off donation items to those in need. If you have items to sell, consider a consignment shop or create a listing in Craigslist to entice buyers.

Design TIP: Look at each individual’s space to determine the best creative and organizational solutions for the room as well as the person. If they are younger, simple solutions will work better than complicated ones and what works great for you in your work space may not work so well for your husband’s office… customize the space for each individual and they will find it so much easier to stay on task to keep it organized and they will love spending time there too!

2. Space for Everyone: Maximize the space in your home allowing everyone to have a place to spend time for homework, reading and fun activities while not distracting others, etc. Create storage solutions in your living/media room where you can store video game equipment, DVDs, etc. away when not in use. Keep all equipment and wiring out of sight and you will find the clean minimalist feel of the space works for everyone’s needs. Research and invest in smart solutions for the kitchen space making it a breeze to find what you need as well as minimizing time and efficiency during those rushed morning routines and tiresome dinner time preparations for the whole family.

3. Invest In Quality, NOT Quantity: When decorating a space or re-designing an existing one, remember the rule of all great designers is to find items of high quality and efficiency and invest in just a few keeping the space open and clean. Add affordable eye-catching accessories (a stunning piece of stand-out art or a large accent mirror) that you and your family love but, do NOT add too many as this creates the disorganized, “clutter” concept and can overwhelm very quickly.

Design TIP: Take a look at the space and consider a color change on a wall or walls, either paint or wallpaper to open up the space and create a focus in the room. Ask your design consultant for the latest trends in wall colors and textures and find the shades that work best for you and your family.

Follow these guidelines to get you headed in the right direction and you will soon find yourself in a home space that exudes peace, harmony and innovative creative solutions that will enrich you and your family’s daily routines today and in future days to come.

So you now find yourself trying to figure out where to hide all those amazing gift finds you snagged on Black Friday, right? What are your thoughts about gift wrapping all those items… love or hate it? We know the task can be daunting but we believe the issue is not so much the wrapping itself, but finding a great space to be creative and efficient in all at the same time!

If you don’t have one already, we want to share the concept of a craft room or home design studio, a place in your home where you and your family can seek out that artist in yourselves or try that craft project you have been thinking about for months. If you have a designated space, now is when you should take the time to redesign it with creative and efficient storage areas and work spaces. A designated space like this is a wonderful escape for all of you on a cold or rainy day where you just need a bit of inspiration. This space can be a room unto itself or a corner of a larger space in your home. The key aspects of an effective design space is the ability to create work areas as well as accessible and über-efficient storage and organizational spaces for all the items in you need.

If you own a business that designs, creates, and sells handmade items from your home, or even if you just love to put your hands and mind to work a well-designed craft room or home studio is the answer for you. It will intrigue your imagination, inspiring you to freely create your masterpieces. Plan your space with the items you need the most, a work table or counter and storage areas separated by category, like art supplies for the whole family, a gift wrap center (very important for the holiday season!), with plenty of space and seating for everyone. Some of the most functional spaces we’ve seen use a stacked floor-to-ceiling storage concept, on at least one wall, with shelves of supplies.

Consult with a design expert to assist you with the right design spaces for your storage needs, whether it be paints, brushes and art papers to fabrics and colorful thread spools. There are many custom options for all your needs so take the time to plan and invest in the perfect solution for your space. One idea we love is these built-in wrapping paper rolls making gift wrapping a breeze, so much so, you will find yourself wrapping gifts like an expert before you know it.

Design TIP: Remember to check the room supplies often, especially during this busy holiday season, so when the kid’s are in the middle of designing holiday cards or your husband needs to wrap that extra special gift for you, they always find what they need!

Lastly, add your personal touches to this space and let the light in as often as possible. There is nothing like natural light for enticing creative thought and inspiration in all your family members. Make the space colorful or subdued depending on your personal tastes and, by adding things of beauty and comfort that you absolutely love, this innovative space will soon be a favorite on the top of everyone’s list.

Check out this helpful expert blog from our special guest contributor, Roxy Hambleton, Nationally Certified Professional Organizer. Today, she is focusing on a troublesome area for many of us… the home office space. Be sure to check back in as she’ll continue to share her insights on the last Friday of every month so stay tuned!

By: Roxy Hambleton, CPO
Nationally Certified Professional Organizer

Can you actually drown in piles of paper? Absolutely! Obviously not in the literal sense, but figuratively and most definitely psychologically, you can easily find yourself drowning in piles of papers and files in your home office. As we come to the close of 2011, soon we will find ourselves needing to prepare for tax season, so let’s take a preview look at how to organize your home office for 2012.

Most of my home or business organizing clients struggle with the amount of paper that has accumulated in their home office spaces. Let’s take a systematic view at this paper dilemma with some basic principles that anybody can incorporate into their own personal home offices. I like to begin the adventure of organizing a home office by being in the right frame of mind. This is very important. Do NOT allow yourself to be overwhelmed by the amount of things to be done. You’ll be tackling one small pile at a time— believe me, it’s all achievable!

Now that you are excited about this, be sure to set aside the time (4, 6, or 8 hours) needed to organizing your office. Go around the house and collect ALL your papers from the kitchen counters, the dining room, your closet, even (yes!) the bathroom. Set yourself up with three large bins lined with black garbage bags labeled: Trash, Shred, and Recycle. Have a great breakfast or lunch, put on some music and roll up your sleeves— allow NO interruptions!

Now let’s look through your papers. But not the papers on the desk or stacked on the floor. We must first start by looking at the papers in your files. Most people who say they want to organize their kitchen counters don’t realize before you touch a thing on the counters that you must first organize and perhaps purge the cabinets to make room for the things overflowing onto the counters, right? If nothing else, you will re-familiarize yourself with the things you own that have been put away for some time.

We use that same concept in the home office. I guarantee you, there will be papers in your files from 2002, probably even older. Tax returns that are not needed, decorating ideas that are “so 90s”, etc. So you need to begin by systematically looking through files and deciding if the items in that file are needed. If they are, the file goes back, if not: trash, recycle, or shred. (**NOTE: When shredding, remember identity theft is a huge problem that can be easily avoided if we take precautions with any papers with personal information, so please when in doubt–shred it!)

As you purge your files the biggest obstacle will be this question: Do I need this? Records Retention (what to keep and how long to keep it) is something that not a lot of people think about or are knowledgeable about, but you cannot tackle the papers in your office without doing some investigation into Records Retention. LifeOrganizers has a great article discussing this topic in detail for your future reference.

Once the files in the filing cabinet are purged and only the current year’s information is in there. Now you look at the piles on your desk and determine if it is:

A current project (that cruise to the Bahamas, the baby shower you are throwing a friend, paperwork for your new doctor–a project is anything with a beginning and an end). For current projects–make a folder for this and keep on your desk;

A reference paper (utility bills, medical records, school papers). For reference papers that you may need access to–file in your file cabinet;

An archival paper (ex: divorce papers, 1040 from 2001, a settled lawsuit) which does not deserve space in the “prime” real estate of your home office. For archival paper–box up and store in attic, garage, extra closet.

If you have a file system in place, whether it’s a built-in desk with lateral drawers in mahogany or a card table and a few boxes as your “files,” and you make a point to set aside the time to organize and have a positive attitude— you’ll soon be coming out from under the surf of papers before you know it!

As the holidays quickly approach, people everywhere scramble to get their homes ready to entertain friends and host out-of-town guests. It is important to have the high traffic areas of the house neat and tidy but make sure not to overlook one easily forgotten area: the kitchen pantry.

Even though kitchens are a hub for conversation and great food, they can also become a black hole for household clutter. Between cookbooks, mail and food counter space before you know it your kitchen has turned into a disaster zone.

Make your visitors feel right at home with these tips for creating clean and organized kitchen space.

It’s the secret weapon of a well-organized kitchen: a working pantry. An organized pantry saves time, money and stress in the kitchen. In addition, less food goes to waste, meaning fewer trips to the supermarket and less stress on the holidays.

Make snacks easily accessible. Both children and guests may want them throughout their stay.

Organize items by sorting by food type. Make sure to turn food labels outward and group items that are often used together. Having your inventory organized makes creating a shopping list easier before heading to the store.

Prepare your prep area. Need to whip up something fast? With all of the holiday events taking place this year, make sure your preparation area is clean and ready to go when you are.

When preparing one’s holiday meals kitchen surfaces usually end up covered in flour, oil, butter, etc. Keep your recipes and cookbooks safe by putting them on a stand.

Utilize corner shelves! Arrange boxed and bottled goods with convenient corner shelves.

Pour your flour, sugar, chocolate chips, etc. into canisters or old jelly jars and label them. Makes it much easier to spot what you have!

Make use of baskets or other containers for corralling things like spices or packets of seasoning, etc.

Make room for high use appliances

Whether you are whipping up pies for your Thanksgiving feast or baking hundreds of cookies for your child’s school, these next two months are busy with baking. To make your life easier, keep your high use appliances out on the counter or in an easily accessible place. Keeping things where you can see them or easily grab them makes your life easier and saves time.

When preparing one’s holiday meals kitchen surfaces usually end up covered in flour, oil, butter, etc. Keep your recipes and cookbooks safe by putting them on a stand.

Hosting a holiday party or a big family dinner involves a lot of organization and can be very time consuming. Kitchen organization doesn’t have to be a nightmare and the advantages are worth it. Organizing your pantry and kitchen space can be worked on gradually and if you take the time to maintain the space it will make the holidays much less stressful.
